Balendra Shah (Balen Shah), who won as an independent candidate, is working as the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Who is Balen Shah?

Although his real name is Balendra Shah, he is popularly known as Balen Shah. Born on 14 Baisakh 2047 in Naradevi, Kathmandu, he is currently a permanent resident of Gairigaon, Tinkune.

Born as a child of Ayurvedic doctor Dr. Ram Narayan Shah and Dhurva Devi Shah, his ancestral home is in Mahottari district of Madhesh Provience.

Balen Shah’s primary education was from Jaljala School in Naradevi, Kathmandu, and he did his post-secondary education from VS Niketan in Tinkune, Kathmandu. He did his graduation from Himalayan White House College in Kathmandu. There he studied civil engineering.

During his studies, he went to India for post-graduation. Shah has completed his structural engineering studies from Karnataka, India and has been involved in various construction related works.

After the great earthquake that hit Nepal in 2072, he visited different parts of the country and was involved in the reconstruction work. Even though he worked during the earthquake and the covid pandemic, he started preparing for the post of mayor of Kathmandu, seeing that his plan will not be effective without remaining in leadership. He is the director of Balen Consulting and Construction Pvt Ltd under his own name.

Balen Shah is also a rap battle singer. He is the winner of the second league of Nepali Rap Battle and he has been involved in this genre of music for a long time.

Shah claims that the mayor of any municipality is the ‘CEO’ of the municipality, and the mayors are unable to work properly due to managerial weaknesses. Although he considered contesting the local level elections of 2074, he has been claiming that he withdrew because the independent candidates of the Sajha party raised hopes.

Shah seems to be very impressed by Bhaktapur Municipality that Kathmandu does not need to be made into Switzerland and Singapore. Shah also reached Bhaktapur to congratulate Sunil Prajapati after winning the post of mayor in Bhaktapur municipality. Shah has also praised Bhaktapur Municipality in the interviews in the public media.

Even though he is not as well-known as the mayor now, he is definitely not the least discussed character in the rap genre. As a rap singer, he has many fans in the country and abroad. He was interested in music and poetry since childhood. He sang his first song Sadak Balak in 2012 and wrote this song when he was in class 9.

After becoming the mayor of Kathmandu, he had a lot of difficulty in waste management. Many had even raised artificial problems to make him fail. But he won everyone’s hearts and solved the garbage problem. Of course, he is not only an engineer, but also a skilled manager. Due to this skillful leadership of Balen, who has all the qualities that a good politician should have, he was able to solve the problem of waste management in Kathmandu for the time being. He is also trying to find a long-term solution to this problem.

Balendra Shah belongs to a well-to-do family. For that reason, he is not confused by the mafia’s bribe offer. He has a house in Kathmandu. Balen, who drove his own car with his own earnings at the age of 25, has an ancestral property worth crores. He is also a very well-earned person from rap and engineering profession. His grandfather himself was the landlord of his village.

While building a career as a rap singer, he became a big fan of Yamabuddha. Even now he is a big fan of Yamabuddha. Balendra also decided to make a portrait of Yamabuddha as a great contribution to Nepali rap music. But after people’s protest that they were trying to make a statue of Yama Buddha in the budget of the metropolis, he decided to make a statue of Yama Buddha with his own money.

Balendra Shah is married to Sabina Kafle and Shah’s wife is a public health worker by profession. His brother is ACCA. Of course, all the members in his family are professionals.
